Today's Thought

"Neither Satan nor any other power can weaken or destroy your growing character. Only you could do that through disobedience. That is why Satan is so intently focused on tempting you to make decisions that will undermine your character. Satan is an accomplished master at making devastating choices appear attractive, even reasonable. So be careful. At this critical time of life you will be faced with many choices. The decisions you will make will profoundly affect life now and for eternity. Make them wisely and prayerfully."

April 30 First morning & ministering

This is our first official morning on the mountain.
After church we went to McQuivey's to have dinner.
The other McQuivey's were there as well. The Elder's are brothers.
We just received our new ministering assignments at church and the "other" McQuivey's minister to Elder Shelley and I.
This is what they gave us.

This is our view every morning.

April 29 P-day

Today is P-day!
We actually went home Friday night so we can get everything packed up and go back to the mountain on Saturday.

We packed up a bunch of stuff including our buggy and freezer.

We made it back to camp just in time for dinner with
Stapley's, Stephen's, Erickson's, Bishop's, McQuivey's, & Ellis'.
The only ones in the group not on challenge course are the McQuivey's.

Did I mention that these people are awesome?

April 27 Saratoga Springs Temple

This cute bird house was made by Elder & Sister Shulberg. They made one for EVERY missionary couple! That is a lot of work!

Our Zone was able to go to the Saratoga Springs Temple Open House. Then we all went to Chuck-O-Rama to have lunch. Elder & Sister Rupp (on our course) rode with us, so after lunch we stopped by Cabella's to find some camp pants.

These are a bunch of GREAT people!!
We already fell in love with everyone!
Our people!
Our family!

April 24 & 25, Monday & Tuesday

Sunday we walked to church again.
Elder Shelley was sustained and set apart as Elder Quorum Secretary. Sister Shelley will be his sidekick. In this Branch, whoever gets the calling, their companion attends most of the meetings with them as well.

Monday we trained in the Smith Pavilion again.
For dinner we met the Bishop's, Rawling's, and Erickson's at "Buon Appetito Italian Bistro", that is just around the corner from Cowboy Camp.
It was raining a bit and we saw a beautiful rainbow.

Monday night it snowed on the mountain, so we got to drive back up through the snowy roads.

Tuesday morning we split up in to two groups. We were in the first group and we all hiked up to Challenge Course 1.

This course was still buried.
The 1st year Elder's got to practicing a rescue. They normally wouldn't be hooked up to the Belay attached to the guys on the ground. They take "rabbit ears" and hook them to anchors on the poles on the opposite tree as they climb up and help a stranded climber. Then they got to practice the Back belay.

The first thing they do is tie the black rope on to the belay rope, then it is threaded up through the pully up on the wires. Elder Shelley did this first tie.

This is Elder and Sister Stephens, basking in the snow.

While the 1st years were climbing, there were a few Elder's digging to find the benches. There is at least four to five feet of packed snow still in the way. Unfortunately, there is no way to get the skid steer up to this course. We will just have to pray for a miracle to get this snow off the mountain.

This is a video of Elder Shelley's first practice with "rescue" on Challenge Course 1.

April 21 & 22, Friday & Saturday

Friday, we did more indoor training. During the morning devotional, Sister DeGroot mentioned that she had some necklaces made to give out to some of the girls last year. These were for those who went the extra mile or accomplished something that was really hard for them. Each sister received one today (on Friday).

We got to go a little earlier, so we went back to the trailer, picked up our laundry and headed for home.
We went straight to Logan to get a few things at Costco and some shoes at Al's Sporting Goods.
When we got home we threw some laundry in and I was going to soak in a hot tub but I ended up sitting on the couch and tipping over at 8pm. I was out until dad asked what clothes go in the dryer and which ones hang up. We changed the laundry and went to bed.

We slept for almost TEN hours!!

Saturday morning, I had a hair appointment and dad finished the laundry and gathered a few more things that we needed.
We stopped to get a hug from my parents and from Chelsea's family.
Then we went to Wally, bought the "Marbles" game from Stan Nielsen in Willard, stopped at Smith & Edwards and headed back to Heber.

I really had a hard time going back to Heber.
I have been SOOO tired and the 1 hour exercise we have been doing in the mornings with our zone is NOT getting any easier.

Sometimes I wonder what I have gotten myself into. Then I remember that the blessings will come and that ALL the missionaries just LOVE it up there!!

April 20, Thursday

Thursday we took our first trip to Course 2. The snow is so deep that the porta potties are still buried.

This is Sister Densley. It is their 1st year as well.

This is the path to get there. Still SOOO snowy. Elder Beardall was up until almost midnight just clearing a path with a skid steer so we could get to the course.

He was able to clear both sides of part of the course. We weren't going to use the zip part, so he didn't worry about that part.

We need to pray for a miracle for this snow to be gone before the girls start coming, WITHOUT flooding Heber City below.

Sister Farrer, our Zone leader, paving the way for the newbies.
It doesn't look as far up because there is still several feet of snow below where it should be bare ground.

Blogger wouldn't let me upload more videos, so here are a couple of links of Sister Shelley doing her first climb and back belay.

More wonderful messages from some more missionaries.

April 19, Wednesday

 More learning and practicing.

The sisters got to practice hooking the belay and zip lines on each other.
We also took turns being in the "nest". The nest is where a sister will be for about three hours at a time, transitioning the girls to the zip line after they climb the pole or cargo net, depending on which course they are on.

Each sister is to learn how to open and shut these twist carabiners with one hand.

Dad practicing back-up belayer.

I finally was able to finish my puzzle.
So cute!

April 18, Tuesday

Training and more knots.
We are getting better and better.
But...will we be able to remember?

I have actually been looking forward to learning knots!

We finally got our harnesses for the year.

Here we are sportin' our harnesses.

Elder Shelley is practicing how to belay.

More fun surprises from some missionaries.
