Doran had to go out to work Saturday morning for a few hours. By time he got home I was just about done getting younger with my hair. Anyway... we both wanted to go for a canyon run. Well HE did anyway. I wanted to sit and read and pretend that I had already got my 4 miles in. Not really, I did want to get my half marathon training started.

We knew it was going to be hot so we both wore our water belts and prepared to walk when it got too hot. I dropped Doran off at the road sheds which are EIGHT miles from home and then I parked at the Mantua church. Our plan was to meet at a shady spot where the off-ramp meets for Mantua. Well I didn't want to just sit on the cement wall and wait for him so I started running UP the canyon to meet him. I got about a mile before we met and then we headed back down the canyon. Did I say it was hot? Well it was. I had to stop a couple of times and walk but not far. We were actually going at a pretty good pace considering this was my second run in a long time. But by time we got to the overpass by Mayor's pond I. Was. Spent! It was a killer for me to walk up and over the overpass. By the time we got down to the first home and some shade we stopped so I could take off my knee brace and cool off on the grass.
By this time we are hoping that people going on the trek are also training in the heat so they know what their body can do and not do, how much water to drink and how much to push and slow down. There will be NO shade on the trek and NO grass to lay down on to cool off. We do not need hero's.
We ended up walking the rest of the way home and it took us over an hour to go that far. It would normally take me under 50 minutes to run my almost 5 miles. Too Hot!!! We drained our flasks and I even walked down in the creek to spash water on my face, arms and legs. Did I say it was hot? I believe it reached in the upper 90's that day. I almost melted.
Please remind us next time that we DO NOT LIKE HEAT! Especially me!
